This is Part 1 a 4-Part Series for sound students about the basics of audio, using historical footage to illustrate the evolution of sound through immersive delivery, created by Rebecca Ormond and Scott Miller. The VR experiences feature full 360° stereoscopic live action video with AmbiX 1st order ambisonic Audio delivered binaurally. In a headset like a Meta Quest 2, sound will track with your head movement around the full stereoscopic 360° for a fully immersive experience. 360° Video from a website restricts the image so only a small portion is visible at any given time (represented by the 16:9 frame above). In the video below, If you pan the 360° mono image within the frame, the audio will track, making whatever is visible in the 16:9 frame appear directly in front of you auditorily.
Audio 360° is a “work in progress” project from the larger Media 360° teaching project. All Media 360° projects are designed to compliment classroom instruction that addresses the specific equipment and software. Education for all is our goal!
We understand demonstrating the more immersive delivery mediums can be difficult in classroom environments. One of our goals with the Audio 360° series is to provide schools, and students, who can not afford full 360° facilities (i.e. recording studios or 5.1 Surround Theaters) access through commonly available headsets!
Currently this 4 Part Series is available for viewing in a Meta Quest 2/3 headset via the APP for PC or Mac. Schools, or students, who have Meta Quest 2/3 headsets who would like to view and listen to the full 360° head tracking experience please contact co-creator Scott Miller or Rebecca Ormond. Audio 360° was created with Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Equity and Accessibility in mind. Based in a simple, high-contrast interface, four 2.5 minute modules are presented as text and audio/visual presentations. The full experience includes duplicate verbal and visible cues, and can teach sound principles to visually and auditorily impaired. Equity is a key goal of the project, and we're actively developing options for the most immersive experience possible on any phone, coming soon (for now, see the Beta above).
